Neurodevelopmental Therapy is a hands-on therapeutic approach that improves function, independence and quality of life through specialist handling and repetition. This increases the opportunities for movement and control for those with neurological difficulties. Movement analysis and the quality of specific movement patterns are used to identify what may be limiting function. This could include high or low muscle tone or uncontrolled movements.  The approach is to engage through play and age appropriate activities, so will be fun for the child.

Rebound4.jpg

Rebound Therapy is where physiotherapy activities/exercises take place using a trampoline to provide the opportunities for movement that are more difficult on the ground because of the effects of gravity. This provides the individual with experience of movements they otherwise may not have. The unstable nature of the trampoline can also be used to challenge balance and to practice control of more complex movements in a functional, fun way.

Postural.jpg

Postural Management is a 24-hour approach that aims to assist a child to maintain a symmetrical body position no matter what physical demands are placed on them. This includes positions like sitting, standing and lying. A symmetrical body position is encouraged using supportive equipment which could include supportive seating, wheelchairs, standing frames and sleep systems or be as simple as using cushions/pillows/rolled towels to achieve a more symmetrical position. The aim is to promote function while reducing the need for more invasive interventions as the child grows.

Developmental Therapy uses a knowledge of normal development and gross motor milestones, as well as a detailed assessment of the child’s needs and abilities to pinpoint the areas that may be contributing to a delay in achieving their developmental milestones. For example, this could be poor trunk stability or a lack of experience in a specific position/posture. Treatment would involve supported practise of positions/activities in a sequential way, in line with normal development. Toys are used to help motivate the child to engage and achieve the desired movements.

Hydrotherapy is physiotherapy activities/exercises that take place in warm water and are fun/engaging for the child.  The hydrostatic properties of the water are used to gain greater movement/function than could be achieved on land. The temperature of the water helps to relax muscles to gain more movement while giving greater input to the sensory systems of the body to provide further information to the body as to where it is in space and what the movements feel like.
